Science provides an empirical way of answering questions about the biological, physical and technological world. It is a dynamic, collaborative and creative human endeavour arising from our desire to make sense of our world through exploring the unknown, investigating universal mysteries, making predictions and solving problems.

Science provides opportunities for students to develop an understanding of important science concepts and processes, the practices used to develop scientific knowledge, of science’s contribution to our culture and society, and its applications in our lives. It promotes six overarching ideas; patterns, order and organisation; form and function; stability and change; systems; scale and measurement; and matter and energy.

Students develop the scientific knowledge, understandings and skills to make informed decisions about local, national and global issues. Students experience the joy of scientific discovery and nurture their natural curiosity about the world around them and, in doing this, developing critical and creative thinking skills drawing evidence-based conclusions using scientific methods.

Middle School

(Years 7-10)

SCIENCE students learn to investigate, understand and communicate about the physical, biological and technological world and value the processes that support life on our planet. They become critical thinkers as they use evidence to evaluate the use of science in everyday life.

  • Compulsory in years 7-10
  • Must attain a minimum B grade in year 10 to enter ATAR pathway.

Senior School

(Years 11-12)

WACE Course: CHEMISTRY – Students learn about the properties and reactions of materials through investigations and laboratory activities.  They predict chemical effects, recognise hazards and make informed, balanced decisions about chemical use and sustainable resource management.

  • Stage 2 pre-requisites – min B Grade in yr10 Science (List B ATAR)
  • Stage 3 pre-requisites – min C grade in Stage 2 Chemistry (List B ATAR)
WACE Course: PHYSICS – Students learn how energy and energy transformations can shape the environment from the small scale, in quantum leaps inside an atom’s electron cloud, through the human scale, in vehicles and the human body, to the large scale, in interactions between galaxies. Students develop their investigative skills and use analytical thinking to explain and predict physical phenomena.

  • Stage 3 pre-requisites – min C grade in Stage 2 Physics (List B ATAR)
WACE Course: BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES – Students are encouraged to be analytical, to participate in problem solving and to systematically explore aspects of living systems, from the microscopic level through to ecosystems. Students develop practical skills and techniques through investigations and fieldwork in contexts such as marine reefs, endangered species, urban ecology, viticulture or biotechnology.
