Maths

Mathematics develops the numeracy capabilities that all students need in their personal, work and civic life, and provides the fundamentals on which mathematical specialties and professional applications of mathematics are built.

Maths aims to instil in students an appreciation of the elegance and power of mathematical reasoning and of the ideas that have evolved across all cultures over thousands of years. It recognises that digital technologies are facilitating the expansion of ideas and provides access to new tools for continuing mathematical exploration and invention.

The Maths curriculum focuses on developing increasingly sophisticated and refined mathematical understanding, fluency, logical reasoning, analytical thought and problem-solving skills. These capabilities enable students to respond to familiar and unfamiliar situations by employing mathematical strategies to make informed decisions and solve problems efficiently.

Nuts & Bolts

Middle School

(Years 7-10)

MATHEMATICS students learn to use ideas about number, space, measurement and chance, and mathematical ways of representing patterns and relationships, to describe, interpret and reason about their social and physical world.

  • Compulsory in years 7-10
  • Must attain a minimum B grade in year 10 to enter an ATAR pathway.

Senior School

(Years 11-12)

WACE Course: MATHEMATICS – Students have the opportunity to advance their mathematical skills, to build and use mathematical models, to solve problems, to learn how to conjecture and to reason logically, and to gain an appreciation of the elegance, beauty and creative nature of mathematics. Students examine how mathematical methods associated with number, algebra and calculus allow for precise, strong conclusions to be reached, providing a form of argument not available to other disciplines.

  • Stage 1 pre-requisites – NIL (non-ATAR)
  • Stage 2 pre-requisites – min C Grade in yr10Mathematics (List B ATAR)
  • Stage 3 pre-requisites – min B grade in Stage 2 (List B ATAR)
WACE Course: MATHEMATICS: SPECIALIST – This course provides a solid foundation for the many students who will continue their study of mathematics beyond the compulsory years of schooling. They engage in posing and solving problems within mathematics itself, with an emphasis on mathematical reasoning, modelling, recursion and the use of technology.

This is an ATAR course best suited to students pursuing university pathways into courses such as engineering, physical sciences and mathematics. It is usually studied together with the Mathematics course.

  • Stage 3 pre-requisites – min B grade or higher in yr10 Mathematics
